Young Arts Project 2008/2009

Cranleigh DFAS has embarked on our next Young Arts Project following last year's successful link with Ewhurst Infant school. This year we are working with the newly formed Cranleigh Church of England Junior school which first opened its doors last September following the amalgamation of Cranleigh Infants school with St. Nicolas Church of England Junior school.

The Headteacher of the new school, Jane Byford, suggested the creation of a mosaic, the design and making of which would involve children from every year group. The children responded enthusiastically to the brief and their ideas have been cleverly integrated into a mosaic by Susannah Alfred, a supply teacher and professional artist. The whole project is being expertly co-ordinated by Stella Baker, a teacher at the school.

We have provided £200 towards the purchase of multi-coloured mosaic tiles along with mirror glass, glue and two large wooden mounting boards. The actual construction work is now in full swing. Chairman, John Baker and Young Arts Co-ordinator, Yvonne Farrington visited the school to see the work underway on Tuesday, 13th January and were most impressed to see how highly motivated the children were and the degree of artistic awareness and skill they were developing.

The work should be completed well before Easter and there is sure to be a lot of interest when it finally goes on display.

The children's initial sketches and their integration into the final design.
